*NOTE – After this video was made, DICE has released TWO Updates/Patches (the first allows you to now get into a jet from the ground. Beware, players can still spawn into them – so your best bet is still to spawn into a jet if you want one!

You can hop into a plane from the ground OR spawn into it. Both ways work. Same way you enter a vehicle, but must be near the cockpit for it to work.
You are correct as of a couple weeks ago… Up until the point of the recent 1.2GB patch it was impossible to get into a jet any other way…
I will be posting an update in order to show your point exactly.
